WV Issues New Stormwater Management Guide
1/4/13 http://www.dep.wv.gov/WWE/Programs/stormwater/MS4/Pages/StormwaterManagementDesignandGuidanceManual.aspx PRESS RELEASE DECEMBER 4, 2012 State issuing new stormwater management guide The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection has a new tool to help communities reduce the impacts of polluted stormwater on the state’s streams and rivers
. Produced for the WVDEP by the Center for Watershed Protection, the 500-page West Virginia Stormwater Management and Design Guidance Manual is the first of its kind in the state. Both state and federal funds were used for the $150,000 project, which took two and a half years to complete and is based on up-to-date research in the science of stormwater management
. The manual outlines innovative ways to use plants and soils to reduce runoff volumes and pollutants at development and redevelopment sites. The guide can be used as a design resource by any West Virginia community interested in more effectively dealing with the harmful effects of polluted stormwater to the state’s waterways
. The manual’s chief function, however, is to provide design instruction and guidance on implementing stormwater practices in accordance with West Virginia’s small Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) General Permit. Forty-seven West Virginia communities are regulated under the MS4 permit.
“This is a resource tool for state stormwater officials, engineers and designers who are required to implement the provisions of the MS4 permit,” said the WVDEP’s Sherry Wilkins, project manager for the Guidance Manual. “By meeting these performance standards outlined in the permit, the MS4 communities will effectively improve the water quality of our streams and rivers and that benefits everybody.”

South Branch Conservation Planning Maps Available
12/12/12 http://www.potomac.org/site/conservation-workshop/index.php.
Dear South Branch partners and friends,
Thanks to all of you who participated in the South Branch valley conservation planning process! We had a great turnout at the ‘map reveal’ dinner gathering in early November. Just shy of 50 people attended, including nearly 30 landowners! We appreciated all the productive feedback on the maps and suggestions for how to make this plan a reality.
Stay tuned for announcements about upcoming events. In particular, we are hoping to organize a landowner gathering to talk more specifically about conservation easements. This will be a great opportunity to learn from fellow landowners and technical experts about what conservation easements are, what the pros and cons may be, and what resources are there to help
. In the meantime, we’ve updated our website and you can now view and download high-resolution images of each of the maps you saw at the November gathering along with information about the process we went through to identify the final map priorities: http://www.potomac.org/site/conservation-workshop/index.php.
Enjoy and have a wonderful holiday everyone!

Free Nutrient Management Services Available to Ag Producers
12/31/2010
Free Nutrient Management Services Offered to Agriculture Producers This Summer
March 12, 2010
The West Virginia Conservation Agency in cooperation with the West Virginia Department of Agriculture will be offering free nutrient management planning services this summer for agricultural producers within the Potomac Valley and Eastern Panhandle Conservation Districts. A technician will be dedicated to pulling soil and manure samples within the counties of Hardy, Grant, Hampshire, Mineral Pendleton, Morgan, Berkeley and Jefferson counties. These samples will be prepared and sent to a West Virginia Certified Nutrient Management Planner for the development of a Nutrient Management Plan (NMP).
Nutrient management plans are one of the most beneficial tools that farmers can utilize both economically and environmentally. Nutrient Management planning is the practice of using nutrients wisely for optimum economic benefit, while minimizing impacts on the environment. Plant nutrients, which come primarily from chemical fertilizers, manure, and in some cases sewage sludge, are essential for crop production. When applied in proper quantities and at appropriate times, nutrients (especially nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) help achieve optimum crop yields. However, improper application of nutrients can cause water quality problems both locally and downstream. Nutrient Management Plans (NMP’s) are recommended for all producers who are applying nutrients to amend their soils.
NMP’s should be updated every three years with a new soil and manure analysis. If you are interested in updating your plan or developing a new plan for your operation, contact the West Virginia Conservation Agency Moorefield Field Office at 304.538.7581 or the Eastern Panhandle Conservation District at 304.263.4376 to schedule an appointment for this free service.
