| Local Foods Initiative - 6/9/09 |
|
posted by: Elizabeth McClintock |
|
The Capitol Conservation District has developed an initiative to increase quality food production locally, manage natural resources efficiently, decrease the need for oil consumption through shipping, and improve the local economy, community and environment.
We would provide assistance to farmers, landowners, and gardeners to increase local agricultural production through funding, technical assistance, and educational materials. Possible projects could include home and community gardens, food storage workshops, cooperative food distribution and specialty crop production. The size and scope of projects could range from supplying vegetable seeds to an elderly person on a fixed income to raising and marketing local foods to support a large family.
In addition to maintaining conservation practices, our Local Foods Initiative supports sustainable farming practices, preserves indigenous knowledge, reduces the need for intensive production, and improves food quality.
Contact our office for more information about our Local Foods Initiative or to make a request for funding and technical assistance.
Note: We donated the funding to purchase seeds, tools and canning supplies for the Manna Meal Soup Kitchen Community Garden.
