GVCD Accepting Bids From Licensed Contractors - 5/20/13

The Greenbrier Valley Conservation District will receive bids from licensed contractors for repair of stream bank erosion along a selected section of Knapps Creek in Pocahontas County, WV using natural stream restoration techniques.  A job showing will be conducted at the site located 1 mile north of Minnehaha Springs on Route 92 beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2013.  Bidders must be present at the job showing to be eligible to submit a bid. Please call Donny Dodd at the USDA-NRCS area office at 304-255-9225, extension 134 for questions about the bid, specifications or directions to the job site. If there is no answer please leave a message.  Bids will be accepted until 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the GVCD office at 179 Northridge Drive, Lewisburg, WV.  Work must start no later than July 1, 2013.  The Greenbrier Valley Conservation District reserves the right to accept or reject any and all bids.

The USDA-NRCS will conduct a second job showing at the Lovelace site near Huntersville following the first job showing on June 4th.  Interested individuals should also contact Donny Dodd at the above number.

GVCD Announces Agricultural Enhancement Program Signup

The Greenbrier Valley Conservation District announces the continuation of the West Virginia Agricultural Enhancement Program (AgEP).  The basis of this cost-share program is to increase profitability and sustainability by encouraging farm productivity through conserving soil and implementing best management practices.  Applications are being accepted on a continuous basis for cost-share on lime as long as funds are available.  Although the deadline has expired this year for applications for the grant and woody invasive species components of AgEP, please contact the GVCD office at 304-645-6173 for further information about the program.

Greenbrier Valley Conservation District Announces Century Farm Program

 

The Greenbrier Valley Conservation District is pleased to announce that the West Virginia Association of Conservation Districts is continuing the West Virginia Century Farm Program.  We are seeking to recognize families who have been farming the same tract of land for at least 100 years.  The farm must have been in continuous operation by the same family and a family member must live on the farm or be an integral part of the day-to-day operation of the farm enterprise.  The farm must also consist of at least 10 acres of the original holdings and gross more than $1,000 annually from farm products. 

All farms selected in 2013 will be recognized at the WV Annual Conservation Partnership Conference at the Days Hotel in Flatwoods, WV in October.  For this year’s recognition, applications must be received by the GVCD no later than April 1, 2013.  Signs will be awarded to the Century Farm families selected by the GVCD.  Applications received after April 1, 2013 will be held for 2014 consideration.

Greenbrier Valley Conservation District Offers Equipment & Services

The Greenbrier Valley Conservation District would like to remind the public that we provide equipment and services to landowners in Greenbrier, Monroe and Pocahontas Counties.  We have the following equipment available for lease:  three no-till seeders, two lime spreaders, two litter spreaders, three post drivers, a pasture aerator, a pasture drag, an engine-driven portable 300-gallon sprayer and a portable mist sprayer.  The GVCD has recently purchased portable animal scales as well.  Please contact Dottie Cyfers or Sam Masters for details.

The GVCD also stocks spring tiles, lids and strainers, as well as filter fabric, Watson, Roberts and Jobe float valves and replacement parts.  Please contact our office in the USDA Service Center, Lewisburg at 179 Northridge Drive, or phone us at 304-645-6173 for details. 

We also offer forage and soil sampling services to producers.  Please contact the GVCD's Grassland Technicians, Jarrett McLaughlin at 304-799-4317 or Devin Johnston at 304-645-6172, extension 120 for Devin for further information.

 



Greenbrier Valley Conservation District Board Meetings - 7/28/05

The Greenbrier Valley Conservation District Board of Supervisors meet on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the conference room of the Lewisburg USDA Service Center, 179 Northridge Drive. 

Due to the West Virginia Day Holiday on June 20, 2013, the June meeting of the Greenbrier Valley Conservation District Board of Supervisors is re-scheduled for Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the conference room of the Lewisburg USDA Service Center.  The public is welcome to attend. 

The Grassland and Equipment Committees will meet at 6:00 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month prior to the monthly board meeting in the conference room of the Lewisburg USDA Service Center.  The public is welcome to attend. 

The GVCD Agricultural Enhancement Program Committee will meet on the Monday following district board meetings each month at 9:00 a.m. in the conference room of the Lewisburg USDA Service Center to review applications and progress of the program.  The public is welcome to attend.  Due to rescheduling of the June board meeting, the next meeting is set for Monday, June 17.
