SOUTHERN CONSERVATION DISTRICT HIRES NEW GRASSLAND TECHNICIAN

The Southern Conservation District is proud to annoucne we now have Mr. Danny Little of Pipestem on board as our Grassland Techncian.
Danny will be based out of the SCD office on Ragland Road. He will be assisting landowners, upon their request, with soil and forage sampling along with many other farm related items. He will also be assisting the district with the state lime cost share program and the state multi-flora rose program. To contact Danny please call 304-253-0261, if he is not in you may leave a message for him at extension 106.

Don Windon - Raleigh County Supervisor

The SCD has selected Don Windon of Raleigh County as their nominee for the Carroll Greene Supervisor of the Year Award for 2009. Don serves as the SCD Treasurer and SCD Equipment Committee Chair, he also serves on other district committees and works closely with the education programs in his county. Congratulations to Don!

2010 SOUTHERN CONSERVATION DISTRICT FARM -

Congratulations to the Okes Family Farm of Raleigh County for being selected as the 2010 Southern Conservation Farm - a lot of hard work by all family members has been done to make this farm such a winning conservation farm!

Congratulations to the Mitch Coburn Farm of Mercer County for being selected the 2010 Mercer County Farm for the District.

MULTIFLORA ROSE PROGRAM - 4/20/06

NEW PROGRAM TO BATTLE MULTIFLORA ROSE PROBLEMS

We are pleased to announce the Southern CD will be participating in the WVCA Multiflora Rose Program. Sign ups will begin May 1, 2006. The program will help farmers with the economic loss caused by the thorny, perennial shrub known as multiflora rose. Cost share assistance will be provided to qualifying farmers who hire a commercial herbicide applicator to treat infestations of multiflora rose. Then, the participating farmer will maintain the treated area as grassland for a minimum of five years.

CHANGE IN PROGRAM (August 2007)

Landowners in the SCD area can now have cost share assistance with spraying for Multi-flora rose. The program now cost shares on the cost of the spray and the landowners labor - for more inforamtion contact Danny Little at the SCD office. The office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday - Friday.

WV Lime Program - 7/28/05

WV farmers can save up to half of their liming bills (this does not include the cost to spread the lime) This cost share program is being offered by the Southern Conservation District and the WV Conservation Agency. Farmers with eligile lands (within the SCD area) can receive a 50% cost share for lime they purchase to improve their grasslands and haylands. For more information contact the SCD office at 253-0261. All soil tests reports with a PH of 6.0 and lower will be reveiwed for funding prior to a PH level of 5.9 or higher.
