Pasture Weed Management Pilot Program - 3/7/22
posted by: Nadene Jewell

Pasture Weed Management Pilot Program

The West Virginia State Conservation Committee is seeking 10 farms throughout selected areas of the state to participate in a pilot program that may result in the development of a statewide weed management program.  These farms will be selected from the Southern, Potomac Valley, Western, Monongahela, and Elk Conservation Districts - Two farms per district.  These farms may receive up to $5,000 per year for up to 3 years to assist with implementing this program.

The goal of the program is to improve pasture productivity, sustainability, and conserve soil while reducing undesirable weed species by 95% over a 3-year period.  This will be done by utilizing the principles of Integrated Weed Management.

Integrated Weed Management takes advantage of multiple methods including chemical, biological, mechanical, and cultural controls to suppress undesirable species.  The program will require the participant to implement a conservation plan for weed management.  It is expected that cooperators will contribute matching funds towards projects implemented on their property.

Local farmers who operate within Grant, Hampshire, Hardy, Mineral and Pendleton Counties should contact the Potomac Valley Conservation District at #304-822-5174 or the WVCA Moorefield field office at #304-538-7581 for more information.  Application deadline is March 31, 2022.  ** SEE ATTACHED APPLICATION**
